AIM OF THE COURSE

To help people increase their effectiveness in providing brief opportunistic support to others in their care who want to stop smoking.


OBJECTIVES

By the end of the course participants will have:

  • An awareness of the current prevalence of smoking in Northern Ireland and the U.K.

  • Explored the wide ranging effects of smoking on the body

  • An informed understanding of the complex nature of tobacco use

  • Explored the reasons why people start to smoke and why they want to stop

  • Examined the stages of change approach by Prochaska and DiClemente and applied it for use in changing smoking behaviour

  • Looked at Brief Intervention to assess individuals to provide appropriate guidance and support for their stage of stopping smoking

  • An awareness of the current aids to stop smoking, their mechanisms of action, dosage and availability

  • Information about further sources of support available
